Networking Services: QoS, Signaling, Processes, by Harry Perros

The book has been structured around the Next Generation Network (NGN) framework, which separates the transport network, services, and signaling protocols into the service stratum and the transport stratum. The service stratum is the control plane for the establishment of networking sessions, and the transport stratum is the data plane over which the data of a networking service is transported. Within this context, the author explains in detail the signaling protocols used in the service stratum for setting up networking services, and the Quality of Service (QoS) architectures used in the transport network to guarantee QoS. Specifically, the author explains topics such as SIP, IMS, MPLS, DiffServ, LDP, RSVP-TE, congestion control, RACF, and VPNs; describes IMS-based architectures for popular networking services such as VoIP, presence, instant messaging, video conferencing, multimedia telephony, IPTV, and service and device continuity; describes queueing theory and simulation techniques used to dimension the capacity of a networking service. The material is illustrated with problems and projects. This is a textbook for graduate and senior undergraduate students in computer science and computer engineering, and also a reference book for networking engineers.

Best book on networking services
By satanw
If you want to learn about networking services, this book is the best resource. It covers in details all the aspects of networking services, i.e., QoS architectures, signalling protocols, congestion control schemes, process modeling and capacity planning. The book can be used as a textbook for teaching a class on computer networking and services as it explains the concepts extremely well with practical examples and stimulating end-chapter exercises.

The book is very well-structured. There are five parts. Part 1 explains the notion of services and their various characteristics. Part 2 explains the quality of service and quality of experience measures in detail. Part 3 describes in detail the signalling protocols such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The chapters on IMS are very detailed, describing the IMS architecture and how network services such as presence, videoconferencing, IPTV, telephony etc. can be implemented on IMS. It also describes multimedia service continuity across different networks. Part 4 covers the transport stratum and comprises of five chapters on MPLS, RACF, VPNs and congestion control. The last part of the book deals with capacity planning using modeling techniques such as queueing theory and simulation with practical examples relating to different types of networking services. The simulation exercises are very well explained and enable anyone new to this field understand simulation techniques and apply them to real-world problems. Overall, the book is very well written and a great tool for understanding networking services.

Great Reference for Networking Services
By dynamicruss
"Networking Services: QoS, Signaling, Processes," is an extremely well written guide to understanding networking services. In this reviewer’s opinion, one of the aspects of this book that makes it so unique is the structure and writing style of the textbook. NS is written in such a way that it can appeal to multiple audiences; readers with very little background in networking services will be able to understand the material and for those with a more advanced understanding of networking services, the textbook provides enough detail on the subjects covered within (e.g. SIP, IMS, MPLS) to make it a valuable read; especially the chapters towards the end of the book that begin to touch on queueing theory. To those considering buying this textbook, I would strongly recommend it; as it will make a valuable personal reference or classroom textbook.
