About the Author

Jane Paley has enjoyed a career as a writer and independent documentary producer. She was director of community relations for ABC Television, and her ABC Notebook educational programs were awarded an Emmy and a National Education Association Award. As a partner in Paley-Price Productions, she wrote and produced numerous family-oriented programs for HBO, PBS, and Lucasfilm, among others. Paley is an assistant professor in the Division of Mass Communication at St. John's University in Queens, New York. She and Hooper are active participants in several animal-related services, including Labs4rescue, the organization that brought them together.

Wow! Hooper is one courageous little guy!

Hooper Finds a Family is a great, heartwarming story for kids since it will not only entertain them, as any good book should, but will also teach them valuable life lessons about hope, courage, making friends in new situations, and, most of all, love. The story is riveting (I am far from falling into the suggested age range for this book, but I stayed up well into the night reading!), as Hooper gets lost in the storm, struggles to survive, and finally makes his way to a caring new family in New York. His journey will capture your heart. It is also a powerful statement about the value of rescue organizations and their volunteers. Anyone who loves animals and anyone who is thinking about getting a dog for their family should read this book.

Great Gr. 4 Home schooling Novel Study

Found this book at the library. Am using it for Gr. 4 Novel study. Covers weather & bullying learning outcomes as well as language art outcomes. Such a sweet story! My 9 year old is an animal lover & could not put the book down and read it in 2 days. He even got his 12 year old brother to read the book. Told from the view point of the dog. The boys loved that it was based on a true story on an event that happened in their life time on their continent.

A great doggie story for grade school children in the historical setting of Hurricane Katrina. It is quite but entertaining and endearing read, though harrowing in some parts especially during the struggles in the storm. My 10-year old daughter has this book on her list for her school's "Battle of the Books" and really enjoyed it! Skimming through it, it seemed well written and appropriately engaging for the age group it targets. Reminicent in ways of The Call of the Wild, but slightly tamer.

About the Author
Sara Ware Bassett (1872–1968) was a prolific American author of fiction and nonfiction. Her novels primarily deal with New England characters, and most of them are set in two fictional Cape Cod villages she created, Belleport and Wilton. Her first novel, "Mrs. Christy's Bridge Party", was published in 1907. She subsequently wrote over forty additional novels, continuing to write and publish into the late 1950s. Two distinct stories

Sara Ware Bassett is very good at putting words together. This work is no exception, the words flow nicely and it is easy to read this young adult educational adventure. Written and set around 1912 a young man with an interest in telephones gets an education about them and has several adventures.

Not her best work, unlike some of her better works, there is only the most casual relationship between the telephone and any characters in the book. Most the telephone education is in monologue in the center of the book about a young mans coming of age adventures. As for the adventures every unpleasant event from potato blight, to more intense events later in the story lead to a nearly automatic raise in Ted's quality of life.

Invaluable info, so so presentation.

I really think the writing is at times rather poor. The explanations could be done much better. I particularly think the analogies with audio concepts just don't correlate very well with optics.

The organization of topics is a bit herky jerky at times too.

For content organization issues, mediocre explanations, and overwrought analogies I would rate this a 3 and barely that.

On the other hand, this info is just invaluable to an amateur telescope owner. The star test is so revealing and so highly useful to evaluating your scope. And the book is about more than just that. Lots of info beyond just the star test. About how that test works, why it is so revealing, what it reveals etc. etc. and etc. The underlying content sometimes takes a real effort on the reader's part to understand. But is so highly useful it is very much worth the effort. Don't know of another source that compares. The info content I would rate a solid 5.

So in the end I give it a 4 all things considered.

If you want to know more about basic telescope optics, then "Telescope Optics : Complete Manual for Amateur Astronomers by Harrie G. J. Rutten and Martin A. M. Van Venrooij" is a better book. Yet it is more theoretical and explanatory. So much of Suiter's book has info that is pertinent and useful to you as a telescope owner. I really think any amateur astronomer owes it to himself to own both. I would suggest the Rutten and Venrooij book be read first. Follow it up with Suiter's book.

This book has probably everything you may want to know about the theory of star testing. It is a purely theoretical book based on state of the art calculations of the diffraction phenomena in astronomical telescopes peformed and written by a physicist. The book includes a short summary of the most common observations for everybody who does not want to read the entire book (and that is probably 99.9% of the readers including myself). You can then go into the chapter of the particular effect you are interested in to read more detail, for example spherical abberation.

This book can be used by amateur astronomers to evaluate the performance of telescopes. It is incredibly detailed and the high end professional can enjoy the in depth scientific reasons for optical phenomena. Those of us, including myself, who aren't quite as high up on the professional ladder can still enjoy this book and get lots of benefits from reading it. What was most impressed upon me was how easily a telescope can be classified as poor by the uneducated evaulater.

If I was able to understand everything in this book I would have said "I love it"

Also the book is very well made physically using very high quality paper and excellent binding.
