This is a heavyweight contribution to a complex multi-disciplinary field and is unusual in that it takes on the fact that although this area has dramatically transformed in the 21st century most "advanced" pharmacognosy textbooks available are a decade or more old (eg Bruneton) and even if an "updated edition is available they retain a conceptual structure rooted in the mid 20th century (eg Trease and Evans). The editors have based their approach on post genomic data that acknowledges it is fields such as the cell biology of cancer and in silico drug development by Big pharma that now drive natural compound research more than organolepsis and the nineteenth century spice trade. Refreshing, original and substantial. Requires undergraduate level knowledge in at least one (ideally more) of the underlying disciplines (biochem, natural product chem. medicinal chem, molecular biology etc etc.). Great effort and recommended for those frustrated by the redundancies of the traditional approach to pharmacognosy (which of course has its place). I hope this volume can be kept updated by the Editors ( a huge challenge in itself) - but at the moment (2017) this is arguably state of the art for a contemporary pharmacognosy textbook. Highly recommended for graduates in other disciplines needing a working knowledge of the scope of modern pharmacognosy. Pair it with Gunnar Samuelsson's Drugs of Natural Origin latest (7th) edition to complement your clasic pharmacognosy book collection and you'll have it covered.
