Not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Let me preface this by saying I knew some basic mathematical programming (logic of for loops blah blah) from numerical analysis. I had no idea anything about object-oriented programming before I studied from this book. Some of her teaching methods are really poor. For example, the "you do it's" suck. No one is going to sit there and read each step and put them in before they can see the whole picture. Just put the whole code out there as example. Her exercises aren't bad, though. Her explanations are good too; they're not great, but definitely not as bad as the reviewers have said. I studied from this book and was also reading Head First Java (which is a nearly five-star book on Amazon), and honestly, this book is about as bad as HFJ. HFJ seems like someone had a seizure onto the pages of the book. Java Programming explains things very well, but needs more example codes instead of the you do its. To call HFJ a 4.5-5 star book and Java Programming a 2 star book is nonsense.

I'm not trying to be dramatic when I say this is easily one of the worst books I've read

I'm currently finishing up Java 2 with Joyce Farrell's Java Programming having been my assigned text for both courses. I have a background that involves a lot of logical analysis and formal logic, which I believe was helpful when it came to loops and decision making in java. Other than that, I had no background in computer science or programming languages prior to starting Java I. I'm currently finishing up the book.

I'm not trying to be dramatic when I say this is easily one of the worst books I've read, especially as a introduction to a topic. You can *maybe* get through the first two to three chapters being able to answer the problems with what you've read in the preceding chapter but after chapter 3 you will have to read other books, go online, and ask lots of questions in forums. It's sort of like being back in 8th grade where you understand your math chapter but then they ask you questions that had nothing to do with what you just read.

Java is a precise language with strict rules. Thus, in requires a clear understanding of what you can, can't, and should do. Sure, if you look at really good and experienced programmers it becomes almost an art and they have their own styles, but starting out it's similar to learning the colors and what you can paint on before you become Jackson Pollock. Like others have noted, it's not so much the gist of what you are learning about. For example, when you're reading about looping, JFrames, and the like you do get a general idea of what they are and how to implement them but not in the way you can easily extrapolate and do your own programs.

For example, you will learn how to create decision making programs by using if...else if statements but you won't learn how to tie it all together. It just compounds as the book goes on because the problems get harder and harder but you never have a basic conceptual understanding of how classes and methods work, how to properly organize and structure your programs, or how to do various things that will be required (like using "suppress" repeatedly in later chapters). You should at the minimum make sure you have Netbeans or Eclipse to use because they will help you see stuff you just wouldn't know otherwise. If your course requires JGrasp just do it on Eclipse and copy and paste. You will get nowhere fast using this book with JGrasp.

The underlying issue with this book is not what it has but what it doesn't. Now if I look back I understand easily the difference between creating a class vs. a method vs. the main method, but when you're first learning you don't know this stuff and Professor Farrell will have pieces of code here and there where as a newbie you think it's a full program but it's not. You'll also find a lot of the examples just don't compile or run. When I wrote my professor about this they basically said that should be expected and just google a better author. I agree completely with other posters who report spending thirty hours or more in a week or two finding supplemental material. One week it took me over fifteen hours, HOURS, to figure out something with syntax that you just will not know or deduce with what you have. There are specific things you have to put for certain things to work and the book unfortunately doesn't provide this. It's sort of like learning calculus but never knowing what function "+" serves. You can sit there all day but unless you're Newton you're most likely not going to create on your own the exact specifications the computer wants.

I'd strongly encourage you to buy other books in addition to this or sign up at sites that will help you, like Code Ranch. When you type in something in google more often than not a forum link to stack overflow will pop up. That is not a good site for beginners. It's almost like people are trying to show off by typing complicated code and referencing a bunch of classes and methods you'll have no clue about just starting out. The only site that's really helped me is Code Ranch. The people there are really, really helpful.

I've found programming to be a lot of fun as time goes on (it's more a hobby for me) but if you're only looking at it through the lens of this book you may very well give up really quickly when there are much better resources out there. Books by Nell Dale are very helpful and you can get older editions for pretty cheap. Finally, I'm not in anyway encouraging someone to cheat but at the end of the day you can sign up for Chegg. They have almost all the answers to this book so if you're learning on your own you can at least see what some programmers came up with as the answer(s).

Avoid at All cost!

Where do I even begin. If you want to lean Java....DON'T READ THIS BOOK! Don't buy it. If your Java instructor demands you buy it for a class, question why. Inform them that most if not all of the examples in this book DO NOT WORK. You will spend hours frustrating yourself and begin to believe you are the most incompetent Java Programer alive. This is not the case. The mistakes in this book are horrendous!

I spent an entire thanksgiving day debugging the code in one chapter for my Java class and was given extra points by my Java instructor for saving HIS and the rest of the classes holiday which would have been spent trying to locate code that MS FARRELL HERSELF HAD TO CORRECT ON THE BOOKS WEBSITE!!

Ask your instructor to proof the examples before they assign you this book and if they STILL want to have you use it for classwork, ask for extra time and extra help immediately. There is no getting around it. I had an employed Java programer assisting me with the code and even HE was scratching his head trying to figure out what the author was trying to achieve.

If you are leaning Java for you own enjoyment, please, look elsewhere, this book will only bring you unneeded pain and suffering.

A good book for beginners

I just went through the book, the most important part i liked is its language which is very welcoming for a beginner. I know lots of graphic softwares very well, but unware of some basic designing fundamentals. This book showed me the way. Though the samples in the book is few and not very interesting but has lots of basic information written in compact form so that a beginner can refer back any time. The book is broken down into basic topics a designer should know and its related subtopics. I liked its exercises at end of each chapter. Kingdon’s landmark work on agenda setting and policy formation is drawn from interview conducted with people in and around the U.S. federal government, and from case studies, government documents, party platforms, press coverage, and public opinion surveys. While other works examine how policy issues are decided, Kingdon’s book was the first to consider how issues got to be issues. This enduring work attempts to answer the questions: How do subjects come to officials’ attention? How are the alternatives from which they choose generated? How is the governmental agenda set? A Good Explanation of the Policy Process with an Updated Epilogue

Despite a background in political science I had never heard of John Kingdon before reading this book for a graduate school class about the policy process. I have now become a fan of Kingdon's work. In this book Kingdon tries to answer a fundamental question, why do some policy alternatives make it onto Congress's agenda while others languish in obscurity?

Before answering that question Kingdon presents empirical data from four policy issues from the late 1970's about the importance of players in the policy process both inside and outside of government. Some observations may be more straightforward; the president is important in shaping policy agendas. Others, however, may be more novel; the media plays a smaller role than people think.

In the second portion of the book Kingdon goes on to outline three different streams that must align in order for a policy alternative to make it on the agenda. The issue must be perceived as a problem; a viable solution must already exist; and the political current must be willing to allow such a change to take place. Finally a policy window has to open and the streams must coalesce to pass legislation before the window closes.

The second edition ends with more recent observations since the books initial writing in 1984. This updated version also presents an epilogue that compares the failure of President Clinton's healthcare reform with the successful passage of President Obama's healthcare legislation. Reading just these final 17 pages presents a succinct explanation of why some bills pass while others die.

Kingdon summarizes what he has said at the end of every chapter and again in one of the later chapters. This repetition may be a bit overdone, but it drives the concepts home. After reading this work I found myself better able to understand why my policy area of interest, urban development, had received little attention on the federal policy agenda. While Kingdon's examples may be a bit dated, the overall thesis still remains relevant and helpful in understanding the complexity that is our nation's federal government.

Never thought I would be interested in public policy....

But, this book is so well written that I am just fascinated by the topic. It is required reading for a course. I thought it would be a dry slog, but the author writes swell and uses examples and case studies to illustrate his points, and it's a pleasure to read.

I read the first edition of this as a grad student many years ago. I am teaching public policy right now and using the updated edition with new students. I continue to marvel at what a great resource this is for scholars and students. If you read one book on agenda setting in politics and want to understand how messy (in theory and practice) the process is, Kingdon is the one.

Discovering a new world as told by a baby vampire

In general I'm not a fan of serials- the typical one is just a teaser with a cliffhanger hanger ending that I find very annoying. So far, this series, "Sire & Childe", is anything but annoying. Both part 1 and part 2 provide a solid story, each focusing on a stage of Sam accepting his new nature as a vampire. While you are left eager for the next installment, I found each part satisfying individually as well.

The writing is excellent and flows effortlessly, told from the perspective of Sam. As the reader, we are along for the ride trying to understand the strange, sometimes scary, sometimes sweet, world and circumstances he finds himself in. Part 2 introduces us to the world of vampires and hints at a larger destiny for Sam. For now, he must learn to trust his sire, Darius, and choose whether or not to accept his new nature and let go of his past.

This applies to the first 3 parts of the series. All are dull and plodding and end with no complete story. They read more like child development books than vampire stories, or at least what I expect of vampire stories. The entire time I was reading, I kept mentally urging the author to speed up and get to the action - didn't work. This could be a good series but its just not for me.

Little Bird as his site called him was abducted right after his turning so confused about himself until his sire Darius takes him away from the clan ( hunters) and gives him time to remember him and what Darius means to little bird a must reed now onto the next book in the series

Today the recidivism rate is around 65%. Almost never mentioned in the media or scholarly attention is the plight of the 35% who don’t go back, especially black men. A few of them are hiding in Ivy League schools’ prison education programs—they don’t want to be known—but most of them are recruited by the one billion dollar industry reentry employee programs that allow the US to profit from their life and labor. Whereas, African Americans consist of only 12% of the population in the US, black males are incarcerated at much higher rates. The chances of these formerly convicted men to succeed after prison—to matriculate as leading members of society—are increasingly slim. The doors are closed to them.

Invisible Men is a book that will crack the code on the stigma of incarceration. When Flores Forbes was released from prison, he made a plan to re-invent himself but found it impossible. His involvement in a plan to kill a witness who was testifying against Huey P. Newton, the founder of the Black Panther Party, had led to his incarceration. While in prison he earned a college degree using a Pell Grant, with hope this would get him on the right track and a chance at a normal life. He was released but that’s where his story and most invisible men’s stories begin.

This book will weave Flores’ knowledge, wisdom, and experience with incarceration, sentencing reform, judicial inequity, hiding and re-entry into society, and the issue of increasing struggles and inequality for formerly incarcerated men into a collection of poignant essays, finally, giving invisible men a voice and face in society.

The truth about so called legal incarceration in the United States

With a forcefulness rarely seen in books that deal with the american prison/industrial complex and using examples from his own life experience Flores Forbes eviscerates one of our most basic (and for some cherished) assumptions: that slavery in America ended with the Civil War.

He painstakingly lays out the evidence that the practice persists today in our country masked as legal incarceration and enshrined in the exception clause of the 13th amendment..

Forbes describes how men and women (many of them convicted of minor crimes) are forced into industrial servitude, bound by chains, faced with subhuman living conditions and subjected to physical torture if they refuse to comply.

He then documents the effect that being "formerly incarcerated" has had on not just him but also on those who seek to regain full citizenship free from the stain of imprisonment.

The book implores those of us who are aware of this immoral practice to not sit idly by while it takes place but to get involved in efforts to amend the 13th amendments exception clause so that once a person has paid their debt to society a path to full restoration of their rights as citizens should await them when they are released.

I found Invisible Men :A Contemporary Slave Narrative in the era of Mass Incarceration to be one of the most compelling books 'Ive ever read and I would encourage those who recognize slavery as a crime of moral turpitude and who also care about the plight of those who are imprisoned to read it as well.

About the Author
Karen Huffman is a professor of psychology at Palomar College in San Marcos, California, where she teaches full-time and serves as the Psychology Student Advisor and Co-Coordinator for Psychology Faculty. Karen received the "National Teaching Award for Excellence in Community/Junior College Teaching" given by Division Two of the American Psychological Association (APA). She also was recognized with the first "Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching" from Palomar College, and an "Outstanding Teaching" award from the University of Texas at Austin. Karen's special research and presentation focus is in active learning and critical thinking, and she has presented numerous online web seminars and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Karen is the author of Wiley introductory psychology texts including, Psychology in Action and Living Psychology.

Siri J. Carpenter is a PhD in Psychology from Yale University. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Science, ScienceNOW, Reuters Health, The APA Monitor (the monthly magazine of the American Psychological Association), the APS Observer (magazine of the American Psychological society, World Book Science Year, and others.

Good book

Because of unusual circumstances with high school I actually took College level psychology three times, once through an "AP" psychology textbook, once in an online textbook, and once in this textbook. This is my favorite of the three, and I'd recommend it to instructors. For those wondering if they can buy the 9th edition instead to save money, don't do it. I once forgot my copy at home and tried to use the 9th edition from the library, and it's organized completely differently and has outdated information. This is one of the few books where the newer edition was released because of new information, not just a money-making scheme. I had the choice to use my financial aid to buy this at the campus bookstore, but instead I saved my money and bought it here for a whole lot cheaper and kept the difference when my refund came.

DISCLAIMER: My class didn't use the WileyPlus program at all but if your syllabus says you'll be using it don't buy this book. The code is not included.

Perfect condition, doesn't come with Wiley Plus code.

For some reason I thought it would come with the Wiley Plus code but it doesn't say that it does anywhere. If you're buying this just be aware that it does not come with the code. Besides that the book was flawless, very pleased.
