PREFACE
This second edition of the book MATLAB for Engineers is adapted to version 5 of. MATLAB. The new features of MATLAB 5 include powerful program-development tools, new data types and structures, more graphic and visualization features, additional mathematical functions and major improvements to MATLAB application toolboxes, among them the introduction of SIMULINK 2. All these new features make programming easier, especially for complex applications. On the other hand, the number of new features is so large that it is impossible to describe all of them adequately in a one-volume textbook. To keep the introductory character of the text, and a reasonable book size, we limited the extent of updating as described below.

We deleted all references to MATLAB 3.5. Where MATLAB 5 commands are different from MATLAB 4 commands, we updated them to version 5. A few new functions and graphic facilities that enhance programming power and graph readability are introduced. Titles, labels and text added to graphs are really improved by using the subset of LATEX commands admitted by MATLAB 5. For instance, instead of writing alpha as previously, we can now write \alpha and obtain the Greek letter alpha.

From the new data types and structures we chose multidimensional arrays, structures and cells because we found them useful even in simple engineering calculations. Thus, in Chapter 2 we extended the spreadsheet model to represent it by a multidimensional array, and in Chapter 10 we used three-dimensional arrays for the RGB model of additive colour mixing. In Chapter 12 we introduced the new MATLAB structure facility to define graphs by a single data structure. In Chapter 17 we used structures to store values of constants together with their units, and we introduced new functions operating on character strings and cells to operate on those constants and obtain the values and the units of the results.

A major updating is that of the material related to the integration of ordinary differential equations - (ODEs). MATLAB 5 introduces new integration routines that solve more difficult problems than those that could be treated in MATLAB 4. Examples of such problems are stiff equations and dynamical systems exhibiting discontinuities. Therefore, Chapter 14 underwent an extensive updating.

A few new exercises were distributed among all chapters.

Generous engineering examples

I thought the book displayed several engineering excercises with fully-explained script files. I recently employed part of the 'conic' file derived in this book to help solve a problem at work dealing with eccentricity! It also isolated the animation process rather well.

The book has a very limited reference to MATLAB syntax. MATLAB helpdesk is far more useful than this book. Don't waste money on it.

Life Lessons

This heartfelt middle-school novel is the companion to Prairie Evers. In the original book, we met Prairie Evers and her wonderful family. They lived on a farm in the country. Ivy was new to Prairie’s school, but they became very close friends. Due to her own family situation, Ivy eventually went to live with the Evers’ family.

Now, Ivy has been reunited with her mother. They have moved back to the city where they hope to start a new life together. Ivy struggles to maintain her friendship with Prairie though long distance phone talks and weekend sleepovers. As she begins to get settled into her new school, she does make new friends, though. Her artwork seems to be taking a new exciting direction, too.

However, to her shock and disappointment, Ivy realizes that her mother has not changed. In fact, her irrational behavior, impulsiveness, and immaturity present very serious problems for both of them. As things change again for Ivy, she learns lasting lessons about friends, family, love, and above all: herself.

Ivy Blake is a hero for all ages. I think that author Ellen Airgood may be, too.

Book Review: The Education Of Ivy Blake

After living with her best friend, Ivy's mother comes to take her back. They move into a rented home but things go downward quickly. Ivy wants to believe her mother has changed. Ivy also wants to maker her own movie, but her mother couldn't care more. She works for a lady injured in an accident to earn money to buy a video camera. Later, with friends and her secondary family, Ivy couldn't be more happy.
The Education of Ivy Blake is a beautiful novel of how one girl can accomplish what she wants to -- if she tries.

My 10-year-old granddaughter liked it very much, perhaps even more than Praire Evers which she liked also. She thought the story was more "intense." She enjoyed the plot and thought the ending was "perfect."

Excellent non-technical book on the development of math!

This is an great book for anyone who has even a slight interest in mathematics. There are lots of references to interesting math ideas & concepts, but nothing overbearing or over-techincal. It doesn't read like a textbook at all. In fact, it reads like a biography - an intriguing look into the lives of famous mathematicians with plenty of math ideas to keep your mind going - all that can be understood with a minimal education in high school math. If there is anything to complain about the book, it is that sometimes it focuses too much on the lives of the mathematicians and not enough on their work (this is why I gave it 4 and not 5 stars). However, if you're into biographies AND math, then this is a must-read, 5-star book!

A brilliant book

I have been reading a lot of popular math/biography books, and this is one of the best books I have read. The way the author weaves history and math in a seamless manner is just awesome. Even the descriptions of the countries/cities where the mathematicians lived makes you want to grab a history textbook to know more.
P.S: You might be surprised by certain politically incorrect phrases like "we modern men", etc ...That is because this book was originally published in 1961

This is an ENJOYABLE book. I am not a mathematician, but came across this book by chance while looking for some specific explanations. The book was so interesting and well written that I stopped my research and read it through. I would characterize it roughly as a chronological explanation of the lives of the world's great mathematicians. It relates their lives and contributions to knowledge to those who lived before and after them. The author strikes a very nice balance between explanation of their environment and their contribution to knowledge (and its acceptance, rejection, or being ignored). Its all nicely woven together. The book gave me the feeling of getting just the right amount of detail and explanation with plenty of references for those who wish to study deeper on many subjects covered in the book. Try it. You'll like it. End of review

Great for novices. Only the basics covered.

It's fair to say what is covered in this book is fairly basic, and can be found on the net for free.
However, all that info on the net, and the way the information is presented within this book, this has been the first to not make me fall asleep while trying to grasp the basics of technical analysis. It's the style in which this book was written, and the revision excercises at the end of sections, is what gives it a 4/5 rating.

For those looking for advanced concepts, and for those who have > 1 year of trading experience, I'd steer clear as this is definitely a book for beginners.

Excellent overview of trading for the market novice.

The best way to describe 'Trading Secrets' is to say that it's basically a beginner-level version of Van Tharp's 'Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom'.

Auatralian trader Louise Bedford is a technical analyst, but 'Trading Secrets' is not what you would call a "technical analysis book". Her other books such as 'Charting Secrets' and 'The Secrets of Candlestick Charting' delve into far more depth and detail about the specifics of technical analysis and charting. 'Trading Secrets', like Van Tharp's masterpiece, focuses more on human factors such as trading psychology, as well as trading methodology and the basics of system design. It's the first book that sharemarket novices should read, both to understand the market as well as understanding themselves.

'Trading Secrets' is divided up into six sections (although Part VI is basically just a summary of the key points).

Parts I and II focus on understanding your own personality. Do you have the discipline to follow your trading plan? How will you cope with a string of losses? Will you give in to negative emotions such as anger or greed or fear? Bedford explores both the positives and negatives of human psychology, with the aim of helping you develop the coolness and emotional detachment necessary for success as a trader.

Part III covers elementary technical analysis, providing an overview of charting and understanding indicators. Using brokers, online trading, and the basics of system design (such as entry and exit signals) are also covered. This part not that self-contained, and serves mainly as a broad introduction to topics covered in more detail in 'Charting Secrets'.

Part IV delves into more detail into system design as well as broader issues of money management. The essential principle of "cut your losses short and let your profits run" is explored in depth through concepts such as capital protection, stop losses, position sizing, and pyramiding your capital into successful trades.

Part V discusses more advanced topics such as short selling, options, and CFDs...which are probably not for the true novice. Again, this is a broad overview only, with much more discussion in Bedford's other book 'The Secrets of Writing Options'.

The first two parts are particularly important for novices. Having all the charts and indicators in the world means nothing if you are an angry, undisciplined, impulsive trader. Controlling your own emotions is a critical element for traders of all experience....even as someone who has traded for a while, I still find myself coming back to these parts of the book.

Throughout it all, Bedford's highly engaging writing style is ever-present. Bedford has the ability to explain difficult concepts in simple laymans' terms, without sounding patronising or if she's talking down to you. Her personal background, as well as her trading methodologies, are drawn on throughout the book, giving the book quite a warm human feel. You always get the sense that Bedford genuinely wants you to become a good trader, as is keen to provide you with as much "learn from my success and mistakes" knowledge as possible.

In all, a combination of detail and engaging style makes this an excellent beginner-level book. Use this as your introduction to the broad principles of trading, as I did, before moving on to Bedford's more specific technical analysis books.
