This review book is satisfactory. It's not the best, but if you just want to pass, this book is a go. If you want to make the highest score, I'd pass. I passed my Hesi A2 using this book and free internet resources. For the Hesi, I would definitely study the muscles in depth including location, mitosis/meiosis, the veins/arteries, ratios, fractions, and conversions. The grammar and reading should be self explanatory. Good Luck to who ever is taking the test. Think positive and you will pass.

Great study book

I loved using this book to help me study for the Hesi Test. I needed more practice on the math and this book helped with that. I feel that I am more prepared that I was before. The content covered everything that could possibly be on the test. The questions and answers were very helpful in helping me understand why I missed the question. I thought the book was very organized. It didn't have random questions strewn about. I really enjoyed using this book to study.

Great Stuff

I am a big fan of the authors 1999 book on Statistical Natural Language Processing, and I and was thrilled when I found this new book online -- just search for "Information Retrieval" on Google.

In these two books, they describe the theory behind a vast toolbox which can be used to construct new tools/products for the Internet. Now I can go back to them when the need arises.

For starters, I appreciate the detailed theoretical explanations of topics that I could not find in other texts, and the references to related work are especially helpful. One of the other books I read was Information Retrieval by Grossman, which is an older book but has a more condensed style compared to this. Grossman's discussion of clustering was more high level and referenced a few more papers that I found useful. That helped increase my interest to read through these chapters in which offer greater detail.

Before I felt like I could place each topic in its appropriate context, I had to spend six months of reading both the books, playing with code and finding s/w packages, searching the research literature, reading papers and other books, and then cycling back to the books. Here's are some suggestions for things I'd like to see:

1. A set of recomended programming tools: in some books on Perl -- such as the chapter "Natural Language Tools" in pages 149-171 in "Advanced Perl Programming" by Simon Cozens (O'Reilly) -- you get a very "quick & dirty" introduction to maybe 20-30% of the concepts in these two books along with ways to implement and play around with them. Although Perl has many natural language processing tools, the Cozens book cuts to the chase, explains which are the best tools, and shows you how to use them. I think knowing such shortcuts aids in learning how to apply and improve on them. The more complex and sophisticated topics, the more likely to make it out into the real world if they are easy to play with.

2. More data/examples on what does/doesn't work with end-users: Numbers, graphs, and charts are all good stuff. I always appreciate it when the authors referenced quantitative comparisons, real-world products, and history of Internet. One of the reasons I had to consult the research literature was to broaden my understanding of quantitative comparisons between different techniques involving end-users, which were typically done in the context of complete systems studies that users could try out.

nice book!

Although i'm a newbie in information retrieval field (I'm more of a machine learning, computer vision, timeseries person),
I like the book most for the following two reasons :
(1) detailed explanation into the level of implementation in many cases (data structures//memory size etc..)
(2) good review on practice vs. theory. The authors present diverse attractive theories, and on the other hand, discusses why sometimes just simpler methods are hard to be beaten down by those more complicated methods from their experience in practice.

This is my first book about information retrieval, and I think that is perfect! The book cover all the modern topics in the information retrieval field. It's very clear and really simple to understand.

An interesting and provocative book

The British architect Frank Duffy applied knowledge of organizational structure to office layout design, space planning and facilities management throughout his long career. He has criticized his peers for ignoring technological and organizational change in the design of buildings. In this book Duffy examines how new information technology and changes generated by climate change call for new designs of the spaces we inhabit. Duffy sees the changes fueled by the new information technology as profound as the adoption of steam power at the dawn of the industrial revolution 200 years ago. Architects currently arbitrate between the desires of developers driven by the real estate market and the needs and expectations of builders. We need to step back from the reflex to continually design new buildings. Having scores of awards for the design of new buildings ignores the fact that new buildings themselves may be at the core of problems relied to sustainability. Architecture is as much environmental, social and political as it is physical. It reflects the kind of society we are and will be. Duffy suggests that information technology has the potential to move from centralized forms of control and organization to more democratic forms. Information technology increases choices while reducing the overall need for office space and creating demands for restructuring existing spaces. Existing office spaces especially as expressed in the Modern Movement in architecture reflect the ideology of Taylorism or scientific management. Duffy ties scientific management to our addictions to large scale buildings, spaces unable to accommodate change, and focused on central control. Duffy calls for redesigning the office space supply chain delinking developers and real estate agents and focusing on business owners and users. A networked society calls for new temporal and spatial conventions. Universal connectivity makes the old 9 to 5 world obsolete temporally and alters the value of place. He sees the new information technology encouraging the development of distributed work and more democratic organizational forms housed in new structures that focus on end users and promote sustainability.

This book is to immunology what "The Cell" is to cell biology

I bought this book as a reference for a summer research project I did. I read through many of its chapters out of need for background for the project and because of the way it is written, I ended up reading most of it out of interest in the subject. The book is very well-written, informative, and interesting. There are plenty of images and figures that help contribute to the learning experience.

There is a lot of information covered in the book, and so in many ways, it is what I mention in the title - a tome of immunology just like "Molecular Biology of The Cell" by Alberts et al is a tome of cell biology. A lot of extras they include (like the appendix that lists all of the CD-designation proteins and etc.) help reinforce the fact that this book will make as excellent a reference book as it probably is a textbook for any immunology class.

By far one of the best purchases I've ever made, and it will remain on my reference shelf for years to come.

Absolutely the best preparation I did for the PE Exam

I'd spent about 3-4 months working through a thermo textbook, a fluids textbook, and Lindeberg's Practice Problems 12e to accompany the MERM. About 1 month prior to the exam, I ordered this, ferreted myself away into a University library during spring break week with the books I was planning on taking to the exam, and took this practice exam under time pressure. It's the single best preparation activity I did for the PE exam. It showed me what the test was actually like, what the time pressure felt like and how fast I needed to run the calculator. It actually showed me that I could relax a little bit. The test showed me where I was competent and where I needed to improve. I used the following month to shore up where I fell short, and as a result I tackled the PE exam with no problems.

This is a fair comparison to the test, I feel that it's absolutely representative.

Great study tool for the PE Exam.

The question format is very similar to that of the real exam. I used this book to simulate the exam by setting a timer for 4 hours to do the morning problems, took an hour lunch break, then four more hours for the afternoon problems. It was a good way to get a feel for the exam. It also helped me know what what areas I needed to improve.

About the Author

Nicolas de Sadeleer teaches environmental law at the Facult�s universitaires Saint-Louis in Brussels, where he is Director of their Environmental Law Centre, CEDRE. He was awarded a PhD with distinction in 1998 by Saint-Louis for his work on the application of environmental law principles to positive law. An updated version of the thesis was published in November 1999 in Belgium and Paris (Les principes du pollueur-payeur, de pr�vention et de pr�caution, Brussels, Bruylant/ Paris, AUF, 1999, 437 pp.). He is a guest lecturer in Universit� catholique de Louvain.

He is also a member of the IUCN and sits on the board of Environment Law Network International.

About the Author

Patrick Frank has taught in many higher education environments, from rural community colleges to private research universities. His recent scholarly work has focused on Latin American graphic arts. He is author of Posada’s Broadsheets: Mexican Popular Imagery 1890–1910 and Los Artistas del Pueblo: Prints and Workers’ Culture in Buenos Aires (University of New Mexico Press). He has curated five exhibitions of Latin American prints. He has also edited a volume of artists’ writings, Readings in Latin American Modern Art (Yale University Press). He served as collaborating author for the modern section of Marilyn Stokstad’s Art History (third edition). He earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and is currently teaching the History of Modern Latin American Art at Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif. He lives in the seaside community of Venice.

misinformation in title

Do not fall for the misinformation in the text. It does not come with a my labs access code to use as that will cost an additional $65. You are better off buying the book new the selling it back later.

Yahiya Emerick is a prolific author on topics related to religion, interfaith dialogue and the Islamic faith. The Ultimate Study Version of the Qur'an

This is the ultimate study version of the Qur'an in the English language. Yahiya Emerick has given us a superlative translation of the Qur'an into a crisp, clear, and easy to read, modern English.

Interspersed throughout the text in a different font for clear differentiation from the Qur'anic text, Emerick provides enlightening vignettes that describe the historical context in which various passages of the Qur'an were revealed and that lead to a much fuller and deeper understanding of the Qur'anic passage under discussion. In addition, over 2,600 footnotes provide a wealth of commentary (tafsir) derived from the sayings of Prophet Muhammad, linguistic considerations involving the Arabic language, Arabic poetry, etc. Also supplementing the text are separate essays providing a biography of Prophet Muhammad, a discussion of how to approach the Qur'an, the ahadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) and their sources, the prophets recognized by Islam, Muhammad's lineage, chronologies regarding the revelation of the Qur'an and the life of Prophet Muhammad, biographies of Muhammad's wives and various of his companions and antagonists, etc.

For any Muslim in America who is not completely fluent in Arabic, for any college student taking a course in Islamic studies or comparative religion, and for anyone who wants a highly readable translation of the Qur'an with in-depth commentary, this is the first and foremost translation that should be gracing their bookshelves.

Superior But Not Perfect

Yahiya Emerick dedicated a big part of his life in creating his expounded translation of the Qur'an. The amount of time spent on research is obvious through his elaborate blocks of background information and footnotes. The "Extended Study Edition" is an excellent resource for extensive research for understanding the history behind the verses and how they were perceived at the time of the revelations. Emerick uses many hadiths [teachings of Prophet Muhammed (peace upon him)] and sunnahs [examples from the Prophet's life] to explain aspects surrounding particular verses.

I was pleased that Emerick disproved many myths about Islam; for examples, the myth that Islam forbids music, and the myth that adoption is unislamic. I disagreed with a few of his footnotes, however. I was particularly disappointed that he upheld the myth that, in Paradise, men will have perpetual virgins "only to please our carnal desires, which will be without restriction..." (n 48). Of course, in Paradise we presumably will be perfected, spiritual beings without sexual lusts. (I certainly do not want to go to a Heaven where people are living with the same unrestrained, sexual immorality as they are today.)

The book lacks user-friendliness on one point, which is that the chapter numbers are not at the tops of pages. In other words, if you opened the book at a random page, you would not be able to tell in which chapter you are reading.

Emerick created an above average translation of the meanings of the Qur'an. He has some fault, however, in grammatical skill and poetic use of the English language; therefore, the literary value falls short of excellence. The translation lacks some elegance as Emerick often misses the tone of the original Qur'an. In translation, reflecting tone is just as important as reflecting the meanings. Although the translation is superior to other English translations, it lacks the perfection that the Qur'an deserves. Still, Emerick is to be commended for a thorough and important contribution.

One of the best translations available

This is a new translation of the Qur'an that was published earlier this year (2010). There are four editions available - a translation only, a translation with asbab al nuzul (circumstances/cause for revelation), a translation with asbab al nuzul and limited commentary, and a translation with asbab al nuzul and full notes. This edition is the latter.

This is an excellent translation written in modern English. It is written in paragraph format, using italics to denote quotations, making it very easy to follow. Each chapter begins with detailed background information. Asbab al nuzul is written in a different typeface before the associated verses, which makes it clear that it is not part of the translation itself. Commentary is written in footnotes, unfortunately in a very small font; however, this is understandable given this translation is over 800 pages long in a single volume. The paper quality is very nice; none of that almost see-through paper that is common in many translations.

The commentary in this translation is excellent and different from any other translation I have read in all that it encompasses. First, Emerick allows the Prophet (SAWS) to explain the Qur'an by way of ahadith, which are contained in the footnotes. Footnotes also detail what a wide array of classical commentators have said about the verses. If it is the view of one or two commentators only, he names them. If it is a majority of commentators, he states as such. If there is a minority view that he happens to feel is strong, he states it is a minority view and explains why this view appeals to him. As a result, you aren't left wondering if the translator is pushing a certain angle. Emerick also includes historical references (people, places, events)as well as some of the scientific/facts and miracles found in the Qur'an. Lastly, Emerick's footnotes include commentary and experiences by the companions. Sometimes it is a direct quote they have made about a particularly verse, but other times it shows the verse "in action" by showing how companions embodied or lived out the verses by relating stories from their lives to further illustrate a verse. For example, a verse about charity may have a footnote that details a story about a companion's generosity.

I consider this is one of the best translations available. Lucid language, clarity on what is part of the translation and what is not by clever use of different typefaces, extensive, balanced commentary, nice quality paper, and the additional sections distinguish this translation from the rest out there.
