Saturday Is for Funerals, by Unity Dow, Max Essex

In the year 2000 the World Health Organization estimated that 85 percent of fifteen-year-olds in Botswana would eventually die of AIDS. In Saturday Is for Funerals we learn why that won't happen.

Unity Dow and Max Essex tell the true story of lives ravaged by AIDS—of orphans, bereaved parents, and widows; of families who devote most Saturdays to the burial of relatives and friends. We witness the actions of community leaders, medical professionals, research scientists, and educators of all types to see how an unprecedented epidemic of death and destruction is being stopped in its tracks.

This book describes how a country responded in a time of crisis. In the true-life stories of loss and quiet heroism, activism and scientific initiatives, we learn of new techniques that dramatically reduce rates of transmission from mother to child, new therapies that can save lives of many infected with AIDS, and intricate knowledge about the spread of HIV, as well as issues of confidentiality, distributive justice, and human rights. The experiences of Botswana offer practical lessons along with the critical element of hope.

From Publishers Weekly
The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Botswana is explored with sensitivity and scientific rigor in this heartening book from Dow, a Botswana High Court judge and novelist, and Essex, a Harvard professor and medical researcher specializing in HIV/AIDS. The authors offer an empathetic account of everyday life in a country where the disease infects one of every four adults—the constant funerals, the heroism of community workers and activists—and miniature narratives from the lives of the suffering and surviving: a teenager raising his siblings after being orphaned, a newlywed's discovering that her new husband is HIV-positive. In broad strokes, the authors cover the transmission and diagnosis of the disease, how drugs are researched and introduced on the market, and the humble and elaborate initiatives that have been so successful in Botswana: circumcision as well as HAART (Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy). Although occasionally repetitive, this richly informative book dispels much of the mystery still surrounding HIV/AIDS, revealing how life goes on for those infected. Readers overwhelmed by (and even numbed to) the images of desolation that accompany coverage of the epidemic will find a realistic but optimistic assessment of a society successfully tackling the problem and a model for other afflicted nations. From Booklist
In 2000, the World Health Organization predicted that 85 percent of 15-year-olds in Botswana would eventually die of AIDS. Life expectancies were projected to be shortened by 44 years. But in 2006, Botswana began receiving antiretroviral drugs, and its health prospects turned around dramatically. Dow brings a legal and human-rights perspective and Essex brings a medical-research perspective to chronicling the extent of the devastation of HIV/AIDS and the lessons learned from treating the disease and beating back the dire predictions. At one point, deaths were so prevalent that every Saturday was set aside for funerals. The traditional yearlong mourning was cut short, and family members had to help overwhelmed hospital staff. Dow recalls his mother’s recitation of the long list of friends, relatives, and neighbors who died, the stigma and shame that has led to divorce in a nation that takes marriage very seriously. Essex details the course of the disease, the public health issues, and the private suffering of AIDS patients. Together, they present a compelling look at the toll of AIDS in Africa and some hopeful developments. --Vanessa Bush

Review
This is a remarkable account of the human effect of a pandemic, written by two people with an intimate knowledge of Botswana and its struggle to deal with AIDS. I recommend this book most warmly for its humanity and insight. (Alexander McCall Smith)

This extraordinary book brings to life the utterly unique stories of people in Botswana; yet the fact is that struggle, suffering and redemption are also universal stories with which we can all identify. The partnership of Dow and Essex, storyteller and scientist, results in a precious alchemy: a book that is engrossing, transforming and an important addition to the canon of the literature of HIV. (Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone and My Own Country)

This is the AIDS book to read—first, because of its novel approach of describing true and very moving stories of the Botswana experience, coupled with lucid and relevant scientific explanations fitting for each of the stories, and second, because of the experience and caliber of its authors. Saturday Is For Funerals is at once highly moving, while providing unforgettable lessons from the greatest pandemic in medical history. Unity Dow knows her people and their tragic stories, and as we would expect from a highly regarded novelist, displays these stories with grace and beauty. Coauthor Professor Max Essex has as much or more public health scientific experience and more insights into HIV/AIDS than anyone I know in the world. This book would be valuable not only for people impacted by HIV, but also for politicians, educators, students, and anyone who wants an education on mankind's greatest 'plague.' (Robert C. Gallo, M.D., Director, Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine)

This wonderful book is an inspiration to anyone who wants to learn more about the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its impact on Africa. The authors have collaborated on a well-written tome that is highly informative yet easy to read and digest. This book will have to be considered for a Pulitzer Prize and other suitable recognition. (Mark A. Wainberg, President Emeritus, International AIDS Society)

Unity Dow and Max Essex have crafted an extraordinarily effective synergy of science and societal journalism. Saturday Is For Funerals explores the fragility and resilience of human spirit through poignant personal narratives around courtships, young love, and family tradition, centered in the Botswana 'hot zone' of the most devastating epidemic in recorded history. In conversational and gripping prose Saturday Is For Funerals engages as it informs, standing alongside Randy Shilts (And the Band Played On) and Abraham Verghese (My Own Country) as a heartfelt chronicle of the turbulent times that AIDS has engendered for global society, for science, and for amazing African peoples. (Stephen J. O'Brien, AIDS researcher, author of Tears of the Cheetah: And Other Tales from the Genetic Frontier)

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Botswana is explored with sensitivity and scientific rigor in this heartening book...This richly informative book dispels much of the mystery still surrounding HIV/AIDS, revealing how life goes on for those infected. Readers overwhelmed by (and even numbed to) the images of desolation that accompany coverage of the epidemic will find a realistic but optimistic assessment of a society successfully tackling the problem and a model for other afflicted nations. (Publishers Weekly 2010-03-15)

The narratives provide a human touch and convincingly illustrate the tremendous impact of AIDS on women, children, infants, friends, family, and culture. While Botswana was hard-hit by the AIDS epidemic, it has provided a successful model for other countries by taking a proactive approach to dealing with the disease. (Tina Neville Library Journal 2010-05-01)

A decade ago, the AIDS epidemic in the southern African country had gotten so bad that leaders feared its people were in danger of extinction; the World Health Organization estimated that 85 percent of 15 year olds would eventually die of the disease. Today, Botswana is the pride of Africa. The country's remarkable journey is detailed in Saturday Is for Funerals, a new book by renowned AIDS activist Unity Dow and researcher Max Essex. Weaving together personal anecdotes and medical history, the authors reveal how a combination of proactive government intervention, education, research, and foreign aid have achieved the near impossible...Bringing Saturday Is for Funerals to life--and distinguishing it from other books about AIDS in Africa--are its first-hand, often heart-wrenching stories of the epidemic's victims...[Dow] shares evocative stories of marriages torn apart by the disease, and saved through drug therapy, of tribal leaders encouraging circumcision to reduce infection, and of AIDS orphans. (Danielle Friedman Daily Beast 2010-06-04)

Unity Dow, a judge of the Interim Independent Constitutional Dispute Resolution Court of Kenya, and Max Essex, a Harvard professor of health sciences, have worked at the Botswana-Harvard Partnership to control, contain, and curtail the HIV/AIDS epidemic that has devastated Botswana. In this informative book, they present the many difficulties they face--medical, cultural, psychological, and financial. (Barbara Fisher Boston Globe 2010-06-06)

The epidemic of HIV and AIDS marching across Africa is threatening to crush entire countries under its weight. Saturday Is for Funerals tells the story of how one country, Botswana, is stemming the epidemic with bold political leadership, a strategic and scientific approach, and more than a little grit. (Priya Shetty New Scientist 2010-06-19)

The book is compelling because it tells us the real stories of people living with HIV/Aids and the devastating effects it has on families. There are stories of deadly sexual betrayal and bitterness, but also resilience, caring and kindness...This hook is then used to engage the reader and explain the science behind the disease in a generally accessible way. It is a work of both literature and science and works brilliantly. (Pádraig Carmody Irish Times 2010-07-02)

A compelling look at the toll of AIDS in Africa and some hopeful developments. (Vanessa Bush Booklist 2010-05-01)

Tragic and heartwrenching stories of victims, coupled with scientific explanations, are effectively woven into chapters on mother-to-child transmission, fear of diagnosis, AIDS in children, highly active antiretroviral therapy, drug resistance and toxicities, stigma, and orphans. The book comes at a critical time as news of HIV/AIDS "donor fatigue" makes headlines, and funding to battle AIDS in Africa is shrinking. This is very important reading for politicians, educators, students, and those seeking an education on humankind's greatest plague. (P. Wermager Choice 2010-10-01)

Dow and Essex bring their distinct and complementary knowledge of HIV infection in southern Africa into a book that effectively depicts both the personal and the scientific facets of the Botswana AIDS epidemic...The science is competently explained in terms that a lay person could understand, and the combination works well, making this book a good introduction to the key facts about HIV/AIDS as well as a moving depiction of the individual tragedies this disease can inflict...This book would be worthwhile reading for people who want to learn more about the HIV epidemic but would never pick up a textbook or scientific article...In my view, this book should be compulsory reading for policy makers and leaders throughout Africa, who often appear to be unaccountably remote from the suffering of ordinary people in their countries. (Sarah Rowland-Jones Nature Medicine 2010-12-01)

Unity Dow and Max Essex illuminate the AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa by reporting on its consequences for the lives of those living in a single country, Botswana. Dow is a human rights lawyer and judge. Essex is an AIDS scientist at Harvard University. They have deployed their complementary experiences to examine multiple aspects of AIDS, dividing each chapter in half. Dow describes the personal stories of those affected by AIDS. She creates play scripts of conversation to situate the issue at hand--AIDS among children, access to medicines, fear and stigma, diagnosis--in a context that illustrates the intimacy and tragedy of the epidemic. Essex follows up with a scientific explanation of the preceding drama, together with his own reflections abpout what is being done to prevent such an episode from happening again. It is an effective strategy, drawing the reader into the particular culture of AIDS in Botswana, while showing what the global medical research enterprise into HIV can deliver for people who live in often excruciating poverty. (Richard Horton Times Literary Supplement 2011-01-07)

An interesting glimpse of the AIDS epidemic in Southern Africa
By simplexion
I read this book soon after it was released, and I appreciated learning about the AIDS epidemic from both a medical and a sociological point-of-view. The impact of HIV/AIDS, particularly in countries like Botswana, is all-encompassing. Max Essex is a forerunner in AIDS research, particularly in Botswana where the infection rates are somewhere close to 30%. The style of this book is written in two voices - Max Essex's and Unity Dow's. Max provides the scientific understanding of the disease, while Unity illustrates the consequences of the HIV/AIDS infection with faces and names. My favorite genre of books to read that of biographies/autobiographies. I like the way that Unity's human-interest stories alternate with Max's explanation of the research that has been done. At first I had some difficulty identifying who was 'speaking' and when - but the book becomes more fluid with each chapter. It is interesting how culture comes up against research and how, given the incessant deaths from the disease, Botswana culture has had to accommodate these new challenges and adapt accordingly. I work as an administrator in this field, and I found that this book greatly helped my understanding of my work. I was interested enough to read this book in a day or two, and the images still remain in my mind. It is not often that you encounter a book that appeals on so many levels - and imparts complex information without being condescending or pedantic. I have read some of Unity Dow's other work as well, and she has a fine, narrative voice. She captures the spirit of her culture so well that it is difficult not to pay attention. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Beautiful portray of the burden of HIV/AIDS both in a narrative and factual manner
By Amazon Customer
The pairing of the experiences of both Dow and Essex concerning HIV/AIDS makes for a powerful illustration of the burden and suffering created by the disease. Not only informative, but heart-wrenching. Beautifully done. Not just a great read for those interested in Africa and global/public health, but can be easily read by the average audience as well.

Great Book!
By BaylorGirl15
These authors have so much knowledge about this. The style of the book is perfect in helping the reader not only learn about the illness but also helping to relate to those with the disease and understand how HIV/AIDS affects more than just the body and those infected with it. A great read where you will learn much.

Best algebra book even if too expensive
By C. Collomb
I have been looking for a book to review some algebra I studied over 20 years ago, and after comparing hundreds of books (yes literally!) I am glad I finally discovered this one.

Why is this book so great?

1. It covers abstract algebra from basics to Galois theory including solvability by radicals, so you should not need any other book to cover the basics before Masters level
2. The book does not assume any prerequisite and is easy to follow even if you did not touch abstract Algebra for a while
3. The book is full of examples, basic groups had like over 20 of them making sure you really get them
4. All theorems have a proof, and the proofs are well explained
5. The material is split in over 30 chapters in nearly 600 pages, making each chapter the right size to make progress and not too long to discourage others
6. Each chapter has around 50/60 exercises with the solution for half of them, making it a practical training book
7. The book size is like 3 ipads stacked together, making it practical to take anywhere at the contrary of other references like the calculus books from salas and hille

Anyways, I am a big fan of this book. The price is really crazy though, so I recommend you get a used copy of the 5th edition instead. The content is almost identical, and in absolute mathematical value identical. Nothing is missing, just some different exercises and some different examples. And for around $30 there is nothing better you can get.

Decent Book... but...
By Chris C.
I am a math teacher (teaching lower-level math at a university) who is reviewing abstract algebra after 20 years of not thinking much about it. I have amassed quite a number of abstract algebra books over the past few months and have been jumping around between them as I work through this stuff. I have decided to review several of them. So here's what I think of this one:

Gallian does do an admirable job of explaining concepts. There are decent examples. I think the book is a bit heavy on the applications especially near the beginning. Gallian does tend to be a bit wordy at times, but not bad. As I said, he does explain things pretty well. Based only on the actual text, I'd have given the book 4 stars.

So why only 3 stars? Because I gave the exercises only 2 stars. They very nearly enrage me. Okay, it's not so much that the exercises themselves are horrible. My gripe is that they tend to be either routine problems (that's not my gripe) or overly difficult proofs/sophisticated conceptual problems. There's not a lot in between. That's my first criticism. Next, Gallian seems to have made very little attempt to grade the problems in increasing difficulty. You look at number 3 and you're thinking about it for a week, until finally you are tired and just move on to the next section... when all along, the "meat and potatoes" problems are buried in the sorts of problems that tend to take many hours of pondering. In my opinion, that's not a good way to present the problems. Next, there needs to be MANY, many more routine, concept-building problems. The problems that are there are okay, they just need to be tripled in number with the sorts of routine concept-builders that aid in understanding and cementing definitions and methodology. Leave the abstract proofs for the end of the problem sets.

Also, and this is more of a philosophy issue, just put the damn solutions in the back of the book. It's not a secret (or at least it shouldn't be). As an instructor, I have no problem coming up with testing material on my own and I've never picked even problems from the books. In fact, I've never assigned a problem that my students haven't had the answer waiting when they need to confirm their performance. A student not knowing if he/she is doing things correctly is a sure recipe for reinforcement of bad mathematical habits when they are not doing things correctly. They need to see their faults RIGHT AWAY and clear them up. It's stupid to have a student spending weeks not knowing if he/she has the material down and going into a test that way. Immediate feedback is critical, in my opinion. And it's my opinion that all textbooks should have the solutions available. Solve and confirm. Solve and confirm. Solve and confirm. That's what builds understanding, not a mysterious cloud that a student gets lost within. Just because a math genius can rip through a problem set with no feedback, confirmation, or hint, it's no sign everyone should have to do that. Not everyone can paint a Mona Lisa and not everyone can internalize this stuff on first glance. This "mathematical maturity" argument is silliness. One does not attain "mathematical maturity" via secrecy, reinventing the wheel, or discovering all of mathematics on his/her own. And all the blood, sweat and tears spent working a problem or doing a proof is 100% in vain when the student does not know if he/she has done the thing correctly.

Anyway, getting off my soapbox, this book is decent and you could do much worse. But, at the same time, the book could be so much better with just a bit of refinement. So... not bad, but there are others I'm more fond of (which I will review).

Great Book, but Phenomenally Overpriced
By Baze
Gallian's clear, easy-to-read text will be an excellent guide to anyone who decides to take a course in undergraduate abstract algebra. Gallian writes only the bare necessities for the student to read. Initially, this simplicity may reflect a writer who doesn't care about the student learning too much. Nothing could be further from the truth- by keeping his paragraphs, descriptions, and proofs concise, Gallian makes it easier for the student to focus on the theorems taught throughout the book. The problems that Gallian assigns as the end of each chapter begin easily, and then progress to very challenging problems. This conveniently allows the student to do extra problems depending on their comfort level with the material.

Despite that the text is very well written, and that the problem sets are quite reasonable, I might dock off two stars- because of the price. Personally, I think that it's outrageous a used copy has to sell for nearly $200. I have a copy of the 7th Ed as well, and beside the problem sets being slightly different, the material is quite similar between the 7th and 8th editions. The 8th Ed, in effect, is useless. If I were you, I'd try to save my hard-earned pennies and purchase some other edition of this book.

The story of the last prime minister of Rhodesia.
By Elisabeth Tromm
A very good book with an insight of the live of Ian Douglas Smith.
His dry sense of humour, his early life in Seluwke,a small mining town in Rhodesia.
His life as a farmer and his family, Janet and his 2 adopted children and their own son.
The book reads like someone tells a story and difficult to put down.
I met Ian Smith and the author Phillippa Berlyn.
Both interesting people.

Where Stephanie Laurens Has Gone Wrong
By Kathleen McClain
Two and one-half stars.

I used to be a huge Laurens fan and I have read all of her books at least once and many multiple times. Her novels were always so strong: she's a great wordsmith, can pull you into Regency life like no other, can elicit wonderful emotion and she used to draw great characters. However, her last several books have lost their dramatic tension and her characters have devolved into the same old characters in every other romance novel.

One reason there is no dramatic tension in her latest novel is that there is no real conflict between the protagonists. In Then She Fell, the characters both want to marry; they find each other attractive and respect each other. Nothing to keep them apart except for their fear of admitting their feelings to each other. Junior high stuff. In fact, Laurens can't stretch the "boy-chases-girl, boy-gets-girl" part longer than the first half of the novel.

The reason for the lack of tension in Laurens' more recent novels is that she, like many popular authors, has followed the romance trend toward making the h so "everything," strong, smart, brave, skilled, etc.; there is no room for her to grow over the course of the book. She doesn't have to overcome weakness. She doesn't have to come to terms with her own sexual longings: heck, even in bed, the virgin h in this novel tears off the hero's clothes and goes down on him. The woman's only "weakness" is being mildly and temporarily distressed when attempts are made on her life. Geesh!

Concomitantly, Laurens has followed the trend of making the H rather wishy-washy, not particularly strong or skilled or even very cocky, let alone Alpha. This H hasn't a macho bone in his body. He is supposed to have been a rake but the only rake-like characteristic we are aware of is that he used to sleep around. So, he was young and single. Big deal.

In the early Cynster novels, the H's were much more rake-like, engaging in numerous risky behaviors as well as bedding lots of women. The earlier H's were also very full of themselves, arrogant, rather Alpha. They would say, "I want this woman. And she WILL be mine." Then they would go after her with all stops out. God, have we lost something when we lost that. These new wishy-washy heroes do nothing for me.

Not that the Bar Cynster women were weak--in fact, emotionally, they were stronger than more contemporary heroines who emote a lot. The original Cynster h's were completely comfortable in their own skins, knew who they were, what they wanted and calmly did whatever needed to be done. I really, really liked them. These h's would say, "No way am I going to hook myself up with this arrogant, macho man who could then control my whole life. My life is very good just the way it is, thank you very much." With the control men had over their wives during that period, that decision was a really smart one, not just a ploy of the novelist. I really enjoyed their run-ins with the macho males. It produced all sorts of conflict and tension. And, in the end, the h's had the men eating out of their hands. Great reversal.

Laurens attempts to up the tension in the story by including a murder mystery cum attempted assassination attempts. This plot frankly made me yawn. I skipped over much of the last part of the book it was so boring. In the end, our Superwoman gets her friends to help her plan and carry out the rescue of the H, poor thing.

I must confess I don't understand this trend in historic romance. We are reading these kinds of novels in order to vicariously live as women from a different era. And, yet, Laurens has fallen into the trap of so many historic romance authors, that is, having basically contemporary protagonists in a historic setting. So we miss the drama and fun of conflict with macho men. Heck, the H's in most contemporary romantic suspense books make recent historic romance H's look downright girly. Blah! This means we also miss watching both protagonists grow and change as their relationship grows.

If you are new to Laurens and like a strong male lead, read Devil's Bride, the first novel in the series about a set of cousins known as the Bar Cynster. For a particularly hot novel in the series, try the fifth one, A Secret Love.

Oh, Stephanie Laurens, I sure am sorry we lost your wonderful characters. Won't you give us a strong male lead and a female who has some weaknesses? And, protagonists who grow and change over the course of the novel.

Decent stuff
By Stacey Lynn
And Then She Fell takes place some 8 years after Capture of the Earl of Glencrae. Henrietta has kept the Lady's necklace that she was given at the end of that book in a box ever since. But her sister has need of it and believes she can't use it until Henrietta has had her success so she bullies Henrietta into wearing it. That night Henrietta, known as the Matchbreaker, for her work in providing young ladies with information about the men pursuing them, gives some bad news to a young woman who has gained the interest of James Glossup. James is the best friend of Henrietta's brother Simon and we met him in the novel of Simon & Portia's romance. James needs to marry quickly because of a plot device any good lawyer would have been able to overthrow, at least nowadays. Appraised of this fact Henrietta agrees to help James find a bride.

You can guess where this goes. It follows predictable lines of does she/does he, with a standard 'who is trying to kill her' plot added in for the tension. I'm fine with it. I know people complain Laurens' heroes are no longer uber alpha males but I rather like that about them. There is only so much chest beating I can take in man, even fictionally. I like James. He's strong but not overbearing & is protective without being domineering. I did especially love the "Well now you'll have to marry me" bit. It was a refreshing change to the usual. I much prefer James Glossup & Jeremy Carling to Devil and Vane, though I would take Richard over all of them.

Only 4 stars because there are far too many prior characters in this book, like nearly every Cynster & all their connections, plus a few Bastion Club members and really, with all them there I can't imagine how the rest of the ton fits into a ballroom. The kindle version doesn't have easy access to the family tree at the start of the book and it's been awhile since I have read most of the books so half the time I couldn't remember who was related and how. Though I did appreciate the observation that 8 years had passed and the later comment that the original Cynster ladies are now in their 40's, so 20ish years have passed since Devil's Bride give or take. There is no way of knowing how old the next generation is but within 5-10 years fictionally no doubt we'll get Devil's Daughter or title to that effect. And that will be no end amusing I think.

Disappointment is thy name
By Mary @ *Buried Under Romance*
It's fair to say that half of the book is a romance story between Henrietta and James, while the second half is involved entirely with the mysterious murderer who's attempting to get rid of Henrietta. The writing is more in tune with Stephanie Laurens's more traditional regencies (naturally, with a degree of "spice" that's prevalent in this genre) than her earlier Cynster novels, Devil's Bride, for example. What didn't hook me to the story wasn't the fact that James is a man exuding a quiet confidence unlike the other alpha heroes of the Cynster family, but that the romance was almost completely overshadowed by the murder, which isn't what one wants to see in a romance novel.

It is also unfortunate that the given blurb highly exaggerated the extent of Henrietta's fall. Yes, Henrietta was known amongst the ton as "The Matchbreaker," but that is merely a moniker given by the spurned males of those she helped. She was more like a relationship investigator, fishing out details to help ladies determined if their intended is marrying them for love, or for some other purpose. That said, Henrietta was far from denying the institution of marriage, mainly waiting for the right man to sweep her off her feet, which, given her logical and relatively sangfroid nature, had frightened many off until James.

James is the best friend to Henrietta's brother Simon, and due his grandmother's will decreeing he must marry by a certain date or forfeit his inheritance, in which case he would have to no way to support his lands and people, he has increasingly found Henrietta the object of his affections. The more time they spend together convinces him of this fact, and so the first half of the book is involved with James's trying to woo Henrietta and her trying to ascertain her own feelings for James.

My other disappointment lies in that the characters seem too generic, too flat to be of real substance. There really was no spark flying off the pages between them (the "consuming passion" seemed to pop out of nowhere); they both seemed to accept that they liked each other enough, and after a time, convinced that it's love. Well it's acceptable to certain standards, I certainly expected more out of a Stephanie Laurens novel. In fact, the villain of the story seemed more interesting character-wise than either James or Henrietta, and he's a cold-blooded murderer!

My final verdict on this is unfortunately, disappointment. Even without the alpha traits of the Cynsters males that have captivated fans for ages, the story could still have progressed better, more of a "capturing" of Henrietta (she was unwed by age 29, after all), anything but having the last half of the book turn into a murder mystery that did nothing to further the romance, as James and Henrietta had already gotten together before that.

I am waiting to read Mary's book, though it may or may not be the last Cynster novel I read, seeing as the allure of feisty, intelligent heroines paired with protective, alpha males is gone.

Christians should have the answers, shouldn't they? Depression affects many people both personally and through the ones we love. Here Zack Eswine draws from C.H Spurgeon, 'the Prince of Preachers' experience to encourage us. What Spurgeon found in his darkness can serve as a light in our own darkness. Zack Eskwine brings you here, not a self-help guide, rather 'a handwritten note of one who wishes you well.'

Review
For those struggling with depression and assuming they are confined to the sidelines because of their mental health, Spurgeon's example should serve as a great encouragement. Spurgeon knew what to do when the lights were on. And after awhile he knew how to take time off in the midst of darkness. We've much to learn here.

Eswine's book is poetic and mercifully short. There are sentences and paragraphs throughout that are life-giving. The writing is compelling and the type of language which resonates with one in the pit. To this end I pray that many who are battling depression will read this book and hold onto these tiny morsels.

Review
...Spurgeon from early years to final days found dark distress ever hovering on the edges of his mind and sometimes launching an all out assault on his very being. How he managed all this, by the grace of God, both for himself and for others, drives both the gripping content and the riveting literary style of Zack Eswine in Spurgeon's Sorrows. (Tom J. Nettles ~ Senior Professor of Historical Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)

The river of life often flows through sloughs of despond. Charles Spurgeon knew that well... Ditto Zack Eswine in this unusual, refreshing, sensible book... Read it, and take it to heart. (David Powlison ~ CCEF Executive Director, Senior Editor, Journal of Biblical Counseling)

Zack Eswine is a pastor with the mind of a scholar and the heart of a poet. His wisdom gleaned from Charles Spurgeon's struggle with depression is theologically profound and pastorally lucid. (Jason Byassee ~ Senior Pastor, Boone United Methodist Church, Boone, North Carolina)

Zack Eswine, like Spurgeon, a preacher, pastor, and no stranger to suffering... there is much encouragement, comfort and practical help to be found in this rich and poetic treasure. (Richard Winter ~ Author of When Life Goes Dark: Finding Hope in the Midst of Depression, Director of Counseling at Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri)

A Gift in a World of Suffering
By Darryl Dash
“I used to think that the book of Job is in the Bible because this story of suffering is so extreme, so rare, improbable, and unusual,” said Ray Ortlund in a recent sermon. “I don’t think that anymore. Now I think that the book of Job is in the Bible because this story is so common and typical.”

I suspect that Charles Spurgeon, the famous Baptist preacher of the 1800s, would have agreed. Zack Eswine’s book Spurgeon's Sorrows: Realistic Hope for those who Suffer from Depression is a gift in a world in which suffering is so pervasive, both for the depressed and those of us who have a hard time understanding why depression is so hard.

THE SUFFERING OF SPURGEON

Spurgeon was unique. He was one of the first megachurch pastors ever. He was British, Victorian, and Baptist. He was uniquely gifted and accomplished. He was renowned for his quick wit and sense of humor. Yet, he also suffered with poor health and recurring depression.

In October of 1856, Spurgeon preached at Surrey Hall to a crowd thousands when a prankster yelled, “Fire!” In the ensuing panic, seven died and twenty-eight were left seriously injured. Spurgeon, only 22 years old, was ten months into his new marriage, and one month into parenting twin boys in a new house full of unpacked boxes. “The senseless tragedy and the public accusation nearly broke Charles’ mind,” writes Eswine, “not only in those early moments but also with lasting effects.”

As a result, Spurgeon knew what it was like to suffer. He could say, "I have endured tribulation from many flails. Sharp bodily pain succeeded mental depression, and this was accompanied both by bereavement, and affliction in the person of one dear as life. The waters rolled in continually, wave upon wave. I do not mention this to exact sympathy, but simply to let the reader see that I am no dry-land sailor."

Because of this, Spurgeon is qualified to help us. Switching metaphors, Spurgeon compared himself to someone who has been in the dark dungeon, and knows the way to bread and water. He is able to help both those of us who have encountered depression, and those of us have a hard time understanding what it’s like.

A FRIEND FOR SUFFERERS

“The fact that such a prominent Christian pastor struggled with depression and talked so openly about it invites us to friendship with a fellow sufferer,” writes Eswine. Depression is horribly lonely; Spurgeon’s Sorrows is a reminder that while the feelings of loneliness may persist, we are not alone. It is a relief to read a book that describes depression and speaks truth, but without glib answers. It’s more of a travel guide about someone who has been there too.

While there are no easy answers for the depressed, there is company. “Broken hearted one, Jesus Christ knows all your troubles, for similar troubles were his portion too,” said Spurgeon. Other great Christians also struggled with depression. “You are not the first child of God who has been depressed or troubled…Do not, therefore, think that you are quite alone in your sorrow.” Others may not understand your depression, but God does, and he is compassionate.

A HELP TO FRIENDS OF SUFFERERS

For those who have never been depressed, it’s hard to understand the sufferings of the depressed. Ironically, Christians can sometimes be the least prepared to understand or help. Spurgeon’s Sorrows helps us here too. Depression is “neither a sign of laziness nor a sin,” Eswine writes, “neither negative thinking nor a weakness…No saint or hero is immune.” Having never experienced depression ourselves, we should be slow to judge. “We should feel more for the prisoner if we knew more about the prison,” said Spurgeon.

Spurgeon also helps us understand that Christians can continue to struggle with depression. “We do not profess that the religion of Christ will so thoroughly change a man as to take away from him all his natural tendencies.” Because of this, “Depression of spirit is no index of declining grace.” Depression is a “misfortune not a fault,” and therefore it does not merit our condemnation.

Spurgeon helps us understand how dark things can get. “I wonder every day that there are not more suicides, considering the troubles of this life,” he said. Indeed, he believed that some miseries we experience are worse than death. Spurgeon reasoned with those who felt suicidal, believing that while suicide is not the unpardonable sin, the temptation should be resisted. Still, Eswine says, “We must take great care before judging someone who tries to overcome miseries that we ourselves have never encountered.”

Finally, Spurgeon also helps us see that our words often fail when it comes to helping the depressed. Right theology, trite sayings, and quick fixes are not enough. Depression is complex, with circumstantial, biological, and spiritual contributors. “There is a limit to human power,” said Spurgeon. “God alone can take away the iron when it enters into the soul.” A Christianity that is only prepared for sunshine and positive thinking is a counterfeit Christianity.

This message is especially important for those of us who preach. We should be careful in how we address the complexities of life, and preach with understanding and compassion to those who are hurting.

THANKFUL FOR THIS BOOK

As a young pastor, I was ill equipped to deal with depression. Years later, I am better acquainted with the weight of suffering that many — indeed, most — carry. But I still need help. I still need to grow in my capacity to care for others, to resist easy answers, and to learn from the suffering that I would rather avoid.

Zack Eswine has served us well by helping us learn from Spurgeon’s sorrows. It’s a book that deserves to be read widely, both by those who suffer with depression, and the rest of us — especially pastors — who want to care for those who suffer.

Excellent Book on Depression
By Michael C. Boling
Depression is a painful experience. It can draw one into the depths of despair with the accompanying belief there is no way out of the fog and back into the light of day and happiness. Many suffer from depression and struggle to understand why they are experiencing this malady. Furthermore, those around them are often ill-prepared to be of assistance and there are even more who believe they are helping those in despair but in reality are merely making matters worse. The great preacher Charles Spurgeon was one quite familiar with depression and Zack Eswine, in his very helpful book Spurgeon’s Sorrows: Realistic Hope for Those Who Suffer From Depression, examines the salient biblical advice of Spurgeon on the topic of depression.

Eswine divides his thoughts into three sections, each focused on addressing a specific aspect of depression. The first section provides the reader with valuable information with what depression looks like and what those who are suffering depression are feeling. The second section addresses means by which we can help those in depression, and the final section deals with helpful ways to cope with the daily struggle with depression so many face.

I truly appreciated the gentle way Eswine engages the topic of depression. It seems as if many take the approach of placing a clinical prescription or title to one’s depression, thinking that if that person takes the correct medicine, sees the correct psychiatrist, or pulls themselves up by their bootstraps, they can move forward from the doldrums of despair. If moving forward from depression were that easy, one would think everyone would be well on their way to happier times.

There are a number of important points Eswine notes, foremost the fact that suffering from depression is not a sin. There are many reasons why someone may be depressed, many of which I had no clue about. It is very important for those suffering from depression to realize what they are going through is not a sinful act, although one’s reaction to that situation could result in sinful behavior.

Of further note is those who are in a state of depression are not alone. Eswine shares the fact that many great men of God went through periods of depression in their lives to include King David, Martin Luther, and of course Charles Spurgeon. When one looks at how these men of God dealt with depression, it is clear they looked to the pages of Scripture for assistance. Eswine reminds the reader that in the Psalms, we find King David describing what depression and despair looked like for him.

Most importantly, our Savior Jesus Christ went through the depths of despair. For anyone dealing with depression, this is perhaps the greatest truth to grasp. Moreover, that reality is also important for those helping those around them who in a state of depression to understand. Tossing around a future hope of a time when sin and death and pain are no more, while indeed an absolute biblical truth, often does not help in the here and now of despair. Eswine aptly notes that “when we search for someone, anyone, to know what it means to walk in our shoes, Jesus emerges as the preeminent and truest companion for our afflictions.” Spurgeon also affirmed a similar approach, stating “the afflicted do not so much look for comfort to Christ as he will come a second time…as to Christ as he came the first time, a weary man and full of woes”, the man of sorrows.

When those in depression look to Christ as that man of sorrows, who endured what they are enduring and who is at every moment comforting and making intercession for us, that knowledge places the issue of depression within the grander scheme of God’s plan. As Eswine so rightly avers, the feeling of remoteness from God is lessened and the depressed begin to understand that God cares and our affliction, though tiresome, is not a burden we have to carry alone.

Eswine also deals with the issue of suicide, a choice far too many believe is the only solution to getting out of the state of depression. This is a difficult topic and Eswine addresses it with both grace and firmness. Again looking at the life of Spurgeon, Eswine comments that even Spurgeon “knew this desire for death. He found language for it in the story of Job whose profound description of misery not only reveals why in our afflictions of body and mind we would want to die but also the manifest mercy of God who would inspire such grief words and call them Scripture.” Those who feel like taking their own life need to read the salient statement by Eswine that “a larger story exists in Jesus. In time, even hope demolished can become hope rebuilt, if it is realistic and rooted, not just in the cross and empty tomb but also in the garden and the sweat-like blood.”

I highly recommend this book for all believers. The wisdom examined by Eswine from the pen of Charles Spurgeon regarding depression is outstanding and will greatly help those suffering from this issue to begin to grab hold of Jesus who suffered as we did, even to the point of death on a cross. I know I learned much about depression and how to help those suffering from this pain in their life. Look to the man of sorrows for he cares for you. That was the approach Spurgeon took and it is the correct one.

Hope for the Hurting
By Dr. David Steele
I have a friend who was born in 1834. That would make him 180 years old. He went home to be with Jesus in 1892 - at the peak of his ministry and in the prime of his life. I have often asked why God takes the heroes of the faith so soon - Jonathan Edwards, John Bunyan, and John Calvin all died in their 50's. David Brainerd and Jim Elliot died before they reached the age of 30. While the question is interesting to ponder, the question is not ours to ask. Enter the Creator --

"Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?" (Job 38:2, ESV).

"You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great" (Job 38:21, ESV).

"And the LORD said to Job: 'Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it'" (Job 40:2, ESV).

I have been learning from my friend, C.H. Spurgeon for nearly 25 years now. He has taught me many lessons. He introduced me to Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan, a book he read over 100 times in his short life. Spurgeon has taught me the importance of expositional preaching. On many occasions, he has reminded me about the importance of the role of the Holy Spirit in preaching, not to mention living the Christian life. He has inspired courage and conviction and prompted me to be unwavering, even in the darkest of days.

But one of the greatest lessons I've learned from my British friend is how to deal with melancholy. Zack Eswine helps highlight some of those lessons in his book, Spurgeon's Sorrows. The subtitle accurately reflects the basic theme of the book, Realistic Hope for those who Suffer from Depression.

Spurgeon's Sorrows is arranged in three parts. Part One walks readers through the basics of depression. What is it? How can one recognize it? What is spiritual depression? Part Two presents a path for helping people who suffer from depression. And Part Three is a practical section that offers practical assistance for dealing with depression.

Chapter nine is worth the price of the book as the author directs readers to the promises of God and shows how Spurgeon utilized this habit of claiming the promises of Jesus in his daily walk with God.

Spurgeon's Sorrows is a short book filled with biblical counsel for people who battle depression and provides help for anyone who is reaching out to folks who are wading through the Slough of Despondence. In the final analysis, readers are encouraged to cling to their Savior who promises to walk with them through every valley.
