Theorizing Feminisms is organized into four sections and includes fifty-four essays. The first section introduces several basic concepts commonly employed when thinking about sexism--oppression, social construction, essentialism, intersectionality, gender, race, and class--and also raises questions about the perspective and legitimacy of the theorist. The second section surveys three approaches that attempt to characterize in a general way the source of injustice toward women: humanist feminism ("the sameness approach"), gynocentric feminism ("the difference approach"), and dominance feminism. Offering an alternate perspective, the third section introduces two "localizing" approaches, grounded in postmodernism and identity politics, respectively. Skeptical of theories that attempt to analyze social phenomena across history and culture, authors in this section challenge, rather than answer, the text's organizing questions. The final section explores the relationship of feminist theory to three liberatory projects--postcolonialism, neo-materialism, and queer theory--that do not characterize themselves as feminist, yet take gender as a significant category of analysis. Each section opens with an introduction and each essay is followed by helpful study questions. The majority of the essays are presented in their entirety.
Theorizing Feminisms underscores the strong connection between feminist theory and practice by including essays that illustrate important political inspirations or applications of each theoretical approach. It also presents versions of the same approach from various points in history, revealing feminist theory to be dynamic and evolving, rather than static. Wonderful collection of feminist works

Absolutely fabulous book anthology of feminist writings ranging from bell hooks to Simone de Beauvoir to Catherine McKinnon. Readers can explore feminism through the lenses of different theories. I read this for a class but I will always keep it on my shelf to refer to if necessary.
Every woman ought to own a copy of this book.

About the Author
Matt Katzer created KAMIND in 1998 to supply solutions using Microsoft and Intel Technologies for small- and medium-size business. Prior to creating KAMIND, Matt worked for Intel Corporation for 17 years managing Engineering development and IT projects. After leaving Intel, Matt pursued the development of technology-related inventions and holds 19 domestic and international patents in related areas. Matt s focus with cloud solutions started in 2009, looking at ways that businesses could improve productivity and reduce operating costs. Matt holds a BSEE from the University of Michigan and an Executive MBA from the University of Oregon.

I have just completed a migration to Office 365. I bought the book to help me with it and pretty much followed it all the way to make sure that I didn’t make any mistakes. The only problem I had was in one area where I didn’t quite follow the book’s advice. As soon as I realized that I had a problem, I decided to get back on track and stick to the book’s best practices through to the end of the migration. The step-by-step approach was very helpful to me, and my migration was successful. Because of this, I am now recommending this book to my colleagues.

After reading a lot of the reviews, I decided on getting this book in hopes that it would have step by step details to migrate an existing Exchange server to the cloud. This book has directions to migrate as a cutover or hybrid approach. The cut-over is very complete, but for the hybrid approach, there is much to be desired in explanation, and several steps are abbreviated which I thought would be spelled out much more clearly. With this book I was able to set up a test domain and use the federated migration to move to the cloud, but there was a lot of guesswork and I ran into some issues and had to look elsewhere to figure out the problems. For someone who is looking to do a straight cutover, this book is for you. For a federated migration, I would look elsewhere.

Promises a lot- -doesn�t quite deliver

This book is an overview textbook of information visualization techniques. The first chapter is very enticing- -it describes many visualization problems, and provides some historical examples of specific visualization techniques of the past. The rest of the book takes up assorted topics such as representation, internal models, and connectivity, and provides some examples of visualization techniques. Unfortunately, the text is too concise to be used for independent study. I found myself puzzled over how to interpret most of the new visualization techniques. For most of the techniques, Spence provides little or no guidance about interpretation, and few suggestions about how to make effective use of the techniques. An instructor who is a specialist in the subject would presumably be able to provide the missing information, but readers who pick up this book on their own might not be able to gain the information they are seeking. The publisher has also developed a companion Website for the book, with exercises and answers, dynamic examples, and OHPs for classroom use. It would have been nice, however, to also provide the materials on a CD-ROM for users who do not have continuous broadband access to the Net.

An easy and useful read for anybody who deals with data

The book provides an overview of the methods and principles behind the presentation of information. I am not an expert in this area but I found that contents were easy to grasp and understand. This makes the book suitable for anybody who wants an easy to read introduction to the topic of information visualisation.
The book is written in in the first person and in such a way that it is in no way a task to read it and the extensive use of accompanying diagrams adds further to the ease of absorbing what is written. It is hard to imagine how you could not find at least one item that is of value or interest to you if you ever have to deal with data of some sort.
Chapter 9 provides many techniques to aid in the development of optimised reliable designs that would be found interesting by any design engineer. The examples that are used throughout the book are remarkably varied which as mentioned earlier would make this book interesting or of value to anybody who has to deal with data and its presentation.

Read Tufte again instead

I'd really like to give the book one single star, the reason being that its title 'Information Visualization' puts greater demand on the way the book illustrates its concepts and thoughts. As the exhibits are often ugly, data-poor and most of the times situated on different pages than the text that refers to them (seems to me an absolute basic in this discipline), the reading of the book is not enjoyable but rather painful. Compare this to any of the works of Tufte.
The text is also not written with care (again, compare with Tufte), but instead in a (not very literate) over-scholarly fashion. Take, for example, this reference from page 146: "The World Wide Web is of enormous size and complexity (Bray, 1996)".
It gets a two-star rating because it actually compiles a number of computerized visualization models (when reading, skip the descriptions of the non-computerized - they lack analysis and insight) which can provide a starting point for further exploration of the field. However, I am in no way assured that this compilation is the best one, or even a very good one. I'll keep looking.

There are many books discussing MPEG video compression. But very few of them actually teach about how to transport compressed video. This book has a reasonably in-depth presentation and coverage of principles and methods on synchronization, buffer management, rate control, time-stamping of compressed video with good examples and applications.

Clearly, this book includes many real stuffs. It does show experience and knowledge on MPEG-2 systems. Hard to get these kind of references for college professors. Most of the books on compression write or use the same materials, but this one doesn't. I like it (even with all the typos -- editor or author should correct them! many typos).

This is a fascinating if overlong look at the megasuccess of Fleetwood Mac in the mid-1970s, after the former British blues band recorded the laid-back rock songs of guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks that made the album Rumours one of the most popular of its era. While working at the band's recording studio, Harris, currently a music business costume designer, became Buckingham's girlfriend and constant companion from 1976 through 1984, and she gives a detailed look—more so than drummer and original member Mick Fleetwood's biography—at this already well-chronicled story of how the success of Rumours provided the income for extravagant cocaine-fueled excesses before, during and after performances. Harris too often uses clich�s, such as her view of the band's beautiful insanity. But she does candidly recount Buckingham's rage and his repeated physical assaults on her. Great Book!

I generally read history books but sometimes I read books about music or musicians. I had read Ken Caillet's book "Making Rumours" this past spring which was another good read but his book ended when the recording of Rumours did and it left me wanting more. So when I went looking for a book to read this time this book by Carol Ann Harris grabbed my attention because it picked up where Ken's left off just as Rumours was about to be released. This was a riveting book! Very well written. A page turner as they say. Every time I put it down I couldn't wait to get back to it. It comes off as sincere and honest. I would love to read a book by Lindsay someday to hear another point of view as well. Get it. Read it. You won't regret it...
BTW- I'm 54 years old. Grew up with Rumours. Saw them on July 28th, 1978 at Rich Stadium (Buffalo NY) Found out in this book it was the second leg of the Rumours tour. They were amazing that night! 75,000 people. Great weather. Foreigner, Bob Welch and Pablo Cruise opened up for them. Ahh what a great memory...

Never break the chain...

I'm a huge fan of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. I had read "Making Rumours" earlier this year, and found it interesting. Ken Caillet, who wrote that book, mentioned this book and stories that Carol Ann Harris had about Lindsay Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac. At first I thought I was reading an old Tiger Beat magazine (yes, I am that old) the way that Carol Ann Harris started out the first few chapters. While she may not have been star struck, she was really into describing how cute Lindsay was. After that, the story grew more interesting as she told tales of band concerts, traveling and parties. Carol Ann was a saint (just ask her) other than loving cocaine as much as the rest of the group and their small circle of friends. She does shed some light on some things I'd never known or heard before. Everything is told from her perspective, so it's hard to say what really happened all the time as opposed to her perception of what happened. I'd like to think she's a decent person who got caught up in a lot of the madness that was rock'n'roll in the 70s. I'd also like to think Fleetwood Mac has grown beyond who they were at that time, however, it's not their job to be role models, only entertainers.
This is an easy read, a little slow at first, but once I got into the meat of things, it was hard to put down.

I go back and forth on whether I like this book or not. I read it in a day or two, it did hold my attention. But I just can't help thinking that certain things don't ring true. In my opinion, Carol pens herself in a certain light of innocence, devotion, and confusion at Lindsey's alleged outbursts. For people doing as many drugs as Carol says they were, the fights seem one sided. She comes off as the most rational and in control person doing cocaine I've ever heard of. If I had to guess I would imagine that the truth is somewhere in the middle and neither one of them can recollect it accurately because of all the drugs and time gone by.
I've seen some comments about Carol being jealous and catty about Stevie. I didn't get that at all. Stevie probably was kind of out there at the time, and she does seem to have a penchant for being dramatic. I laughed out loud at the part where Stevie compared Lindsey's grand mal seizure with her poodle getting sick from being overheated. I actually think the parts about Stevie seemed spot on. Of course Stevie wouldn't be raring to go be BFFs with Lindsey's new girlfriend. Those two still talk about each other and their relationship even now, imagine how raw it was back in the 70's when Lindsey's new girlfriend was there all the time and they were constantly singing songs about their breakup in rehearsals and at every show.
I would say this book is interesting, but it seems biased, which is what you should expect in my opinion when someone writes their own memoir.
